TUNIS, Tunisia, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A Tunisian man jailed for posting cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad online was granted asylum in Sweden and a pardon from the Tunisian government.
Jabeur Mejri was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison in March 2012, and President Moncef Marzouki said in recent months he planned to free the cartoonist when the time was right, Tunisia Live reported Tuesday.
Mejri was scheduled to apply for a visa to Sweden Wednesday. The visa already has been approved by the Swedish government, attorney Ahmed Mslemi said.
Mslemi said Mejri was set to be pardoned once travel arrangements could be made.
