Full contents of bags in phone hacking case made public

LONDON, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- British prosecutors have revealed the full contents of bags allegedly concealed from police during their investigation into the country's phone hacking scandal.

Charlie Brooks, husband of former News Corp., executive Rebekah Brooks who is at the center of the phone hacking scandal, allegedly tried disposing of two bags in the underground parking garage at their London home. The bags included brown leather briefcase that held a laptop computer, some paperwork relating to road repairs, the pornographic magazine "Lesbian Lovers" and seven pornographic DVDs, the Guardian reported Monday.

A second bag contained a second laptop with a sticker indicating it was property of News International, the company then operating the tabloid News of the World where Brooks worked and where reporters and editors allegedly routinely hacked into sources' cellphones to get information.

The second bag also contained a smartphone and an iPad.

Prosecutors have not said what, if any information relevant to the phone hacking investigation is contained on the electronic devices Brooks is charged with trying to keep out of police hands.

Prosecutors alleged Brooks removed the items from the family's home the day his wife was arrested and police executed a search warrant at their home. He allegedly tried tossing them into the garbage but a cleaner found the items the next day and turned over to police.

Brooks' defense team has contended the electronics were old and of no use and not relevant to his wife's arrest.
