800-pound diabetic dies, despite destruction to get him out of house

DOVER, England, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A nearly 800-pound diabetic died after rescuers had to dismantle part of his home so paramedics could lift him out, British officials said.

Ex-professional wrestler Clive Carpenter, 61, lived alone in a three-story home in Dover, England, Britain's Mirror newspaper reported.

Carpenter, a divorced father of two, wrestled under the ring nickname Cargantula. Rescuers were called to his home by his adult daughter.

Neighbor Geraldine Rudge told the newspaper rescue crews found him lying on the floor, unable to sit up, "They lifted him on to a specialist board, like you see in a mountain rescue operation," Rudge said. "His son Scott then sawed off the banisters on his stairs to the front door so they had room to carry him down to a specially large ambulance.

"They also had to remove panels from either side of the stairway," the neighbor said. "It just wasn't wide enough because of Clive's size."

Carpenter was a professional wrestler in the 1980s and was a friend of rivals Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks, both now dead, the Mirror said.

Clive friend Stewart Underdown, 59, called him "a gentle giant."
