U.S. citizen detained in UAE for parody video sent home

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A United States citizen who was imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates for a video that made fun of UAE teens was sent home Thursday, officials said.

Shezanne Cassim, 29, of Woodbury, Minn., left Dubai early Thursday, CNN reported.

Cassim was arrested in April after he posted a 19-minute video on YouTube that made fun of suburban Emirati teens who are influenced by hip-hop culture.

In December, Cassim was sentenced to a year in prison and pay a $2,700 fine for charges that were not read in court.

UAE officials said Cassim "was charged under the UAE's penal code" and was "entitled to the fair trial protections contained in the UAE's constitution."

"My family and I are relieved and overjoyed that there is finally an end to this," Shervon Cassim, Shezanne's brother, told CNN
