Missing man found alive in truck buried in snowdrift

LEAMINGTON, Ontario, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- The search for a 70-year-old Canadian man had a happy ending when police found him alive in his pickup truck buried in a snowdrift.

John Friesen of Leamington, Ontario, was reported missing late Monday, a few hours after he left home in his pickup truck, CTV reported. He was found Tuesday afternoon when a police officer spotted a vehicle mostly covered in snow.

"All they could see peering out from the snowdrift was a taillight," Constable Stephanie Moniz of the Leamington Police told CTVNews.ca.

The officers discovered the vehicle was Friesen's 2008 Sierra and found him in the cab. The officers said Friesen, who had spent almost 24 hours in the truck on the coldest day in the area in 20 years, was suffering from cold but was able to respond to questions.

Friesen was taken to a hospital for examination.

Officers said they were not able to ask him why he did not try to get to one of the cottages in the area, the Windsor Star reported. A reader who commented on the paper's story said most of the cottages are weekend and summer homes that are empty in the winter.
