BEIRUT, Lebanon, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The head of an al-Qaida-linked group taking responsibility for November's bombing at the Iranian Embassy in Beirut has been arrested, a Lebanese official said.
Majid al-Majid, leader of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, "was arrested by the intelligence services of the Lebanese army in Beirut," Lebanese Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn said Wednesday.
He did did not provide specifics about the arrest, MENA reported.
"He was wanted by the Lebanese authorities and is currently being interrogated in secret," Ghosn said.
Also Wednesday, the Twitter account of Sirajeddin Zreikat, a member of the Sunni Muslim extremist Abdullah Azzam Brigades, apparently was suspended, MENA said.
Zreikat had claimed responsibility for the double bombing at the Iranian Embassy in Beirut that killed 25 people. He had warned of more attacks in Lebanon if Hezbollah kept sending troops to support President Bashar Assad's regime against rebels in Syria's civil war.
