CAIRO, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Al-Jazeera called on Egyptian authorities to release two of its producers, a cameraman and reporter who were arrested in Cairo.
"Al-Jazeera demands the immediate release of its journalists," a statement from the Qatar-based Arab network said.
The arrests Sunday came after the Committee to Protect Journalists issued a report saying Egypt, Syria and Iraq are considered the deadliest countries for journalists, CNN reported.
The committee's report said 70 journalists were killed in 2013, six in Egypt.
Egyptian security forces arrested producers Mohamed Fahmt and Baher Mohamed, cameraman Mohamed Fawzy and Australian journalist Peter Greste, who works for al-Jazeera in Cairo, the network said. Greste previously worked for Reuters, CNN and the BBC.
Egypt's Interior Ministry said on its Facebook page that security forces arrested an Australian journalist and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood at a Cairo hotel, CNN said. The ministry said the member of the brotherhood was involved in broadcasting damaging news about the Egyptian government.
