BEIRUT, Lebanon, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Security was tight in Beirut Sunday where hundreds gathered for the funeral of former Lebanese government minister Mohammed Shatah, officials said.
Shatah and five others were killed Friday when a car bomb exploded near his vehicle in Beirut, the Daily Star reported Sunday. A sixth victim, a teenager, died of his wounds Saturday. About 70 people were wounded in the explosion.
Shatah was finance minister in Prime Minister Sa'ad Hariri's government and also served as an ambassador to the United States.
The Lebanese army and internal security forces beefed up their presence in the Lebanese capital, blocking roads and neighborhoods leading to the Mohammad al-Amin Mosque in Martyrs' Square where the funeral was to take place, the newspaper said.
No group claimed responsibility for Friday's bombing.
