Rocket launched from Gaza hits south of Ashkelon; no injuries reported

JERUSALEM, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A rocket fired from Gaza exploded in a residential area of the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council in southern Israel, officials said. No injuries were reported.

A police bomb squad on Monday found remnants of the rocket that was fired Sunday night, Ynetnews.com reported.

Most residents said they didn't hear an explosion and the sight of the bomb squad in the area created a sense of panic, the report said.

"We were very lucky that it happened in the middle of the night, when no one's wandering in the streets," a resident said. "It completely caught us by surprise. We have become used to the quiet since Pillar of Defense (an Israeli military operation in Gaza that ended in November 2012)."

The rocket fell hours after a bomb was detonated on a bus in Bat Yam soon after the driver evacuated the passengers to safety, police said.

In Egypt, a military official told Palestinian news agency Ma'an a rocket fired from Gaza landed in Egyptian territorial water, less than 400 feet from the city of Rafah. The representative said Hamas announced it was a trial launch that had erroneously reached Egypt.
