Former Sarkozy aide Gueant held for questioning in corruption probe

PARIS, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Former French Interior Minister Claude Gueant was held for questioning Tuesday by the Paris prosecutor's office in a corruption investigation.

It was revealed in an investigation in June that Gueant, 68, also the chief of staff to former President Nicolas Sarkozy, allegedly received 10,000 euros ($13,771) in cash every month between 2002 and 2004 from the national police budget.

His supporters claimed the cash was not for his personal use but to pay bonuses to police officers assigned to protect Sarkozy.

National police chief Michael Gaudin was also held for questioning, Radio France Internationale said Tuesday.

A previous investigation also accused Gueant of receiving 500,000 euros ($688,800) from Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, who was deposed and slain in that country's 2011 revolution.
