IZHEVSK, Russia, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Mikhail Kalashnikov, the inventor of the world's most famous firearm, the AK-47, has been hospitalized in Russia in serious condition, officials said.
"His condition is serious but stable. All the necessary treatment and diagnostic procedures are being carried out," a spokesman for the health ministry of Udmurtia, Kalashnikov's home region, said Monday.

Kalashnikov, 94, underwent an operation to have a pacemaker fitted in June, RIA Novosti reported.
He was discharged from the hospital in early September, but return on Dec. 4 for health checks and convalescence procedures, the health ministry said.
