Cholera kills 10; hospital is overcrowded with 300 other patients

KANO, Nigeria, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Ten people in Nigeria's Kano State have died from cholera and another 300 have been hospitalized with the disease, health officials said.

The recent outbreak has led to crowded conditions at the government-owned Zana hospital, the Nigerian Tribune reported, and some of the patients were put on the floor.

Dr. Tijjani Hussein, the deputy director of the state's ministry of health, said the government is advising residents to rush their family members to the hospital if they are vomiting or have diarrhea.

He also urged people to practice personal hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.

Family members of those diagnosed with cholera are also being advised not to visit their relatives, the Tribune reported.
