MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Nine people have been found shot to death along a major highway in northeastern Nigeria, officials say.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were passengers on a bus and a golf cart that were attacked by Boko Haram insurgents, Leadership Newspapers reported Thursday.
The bodies were discovered Wednesday by people attempting to travel in Biu in the southern region of Borno state after attending a political gathering in Maidugiri.
"We had to turn back because we saw and counted nine bodies and there was nobody around there," they said. "So, we were afraid to continue our journey to Biu."
Nigerian security forces have not confirmed the attack, but the report has caused some people to delay trips.
The incident was the latest in a series of attacks along the highway in the past week. Two trucks carrying oranges were attacked Monday and the occupants kidnapped.
