Boy with gouged out eyes leaves hospital

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Six-year-old Guo Bin, whose eyes were gouged out in an attack four months ago in China, went home Thursday with prosthetic replacements.

Guo from northern China's Shanxi province, who lost his eyes during the August attack, received cosmetic eye shells after undergoing six-hour ocular prosthesis implant surgery at the C-MER (Shenzhen) Dennis Lam Eye Hospital in southern Guangdong province, China Daily reported Thursday.

Doctors said Guo was discharged from the hospital Thursday after an evaluation showed he had not only grown taller and gained weight, but had been more active during his stay at the hospital.

The report said a video released by the hospital showed Guo using a computer and playing with toys and a musical instrument.

The boy's parents decided to take him home after being satisfied with his progress, the report said. He is expected to return to school after going home.

The boy was taken to the hospital on Sept. 10 and doctors performed the surgery for free, the report said. They also provided free physical therapy and psychological counseling.

Chinese police say the boy was attacked by a woman later identified as his aunt. Police said the woman died after jumping in a well near her home six days after attacking the boy.
