Syrian rights group condemns abduction of human rights lawyer, others

DAMASCUS, Syria, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The Syrian Network for Human Rights has condemned the kidnapping of human rights lawyer Razan Zaitouneh and three associates from the Syrian city of Douma.

The four were abducted Tuesday from the offices of the Violations Documentations Center in the rebel-held suburb of Damascus, SNHR said in a statement.

Those kidnapped in addition to Zaitouneh were Wael Hamada, her husband; activist Samira Alkhalil; and Nazem Al-Hamidi, an attorney.

The human rights organization called for opposition groups in the region to do everything possible to achieve release of the kidnap victims and hold their kidnappers responsible.

No group has claimed responsibility for the abductions, but opposition groups blamed hard line rebel groups, the Financial Times reported.

A statement issued by the documentation center said the kidnappings signal "yet again the endeavor of some to undermine any form of civil action to help Syrians in the liberated areas to rule and provide for themselves."
