Ex-Cali cartel chief charged in massacre of at least 245 Colombians

BOGOTA, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A former chief in the Cali drug cartel has been charged in the so-call Massacre of Trujillo in which at least 245 people were killed, Colombian prosecutors say.

Diego Montoya, also known as "Don Diego," is accused of orchestrating the killings in collaboration with members of the police, army, regional politicians and members of paramilitary groups, Colombia Reports said Tuesday.

Between 245 and 342 people died in the series of killings, which occurred between 1988 and 1994 in the city of Trujillo in Valle del Cauca state in southwestern Colombia.

Victims included a priest, union members and alleged guerrilla members.

Montoya is currently serving a 45-year prison sentence in the United States. He was extradited to the United States in 2008, where he was convicted of charges including murder, drug trafficking obstruction of justice and money laundering.
