A family of five was killed by a carbon monoxide leak Monday in Bursa in northwestern Anatolia, police said. The parents and their three children were sleeping in the same room.

Last week, Semra Yildiz, 39, a physically disabled woman, was overcome by carbon monoxide Wednesday in the bathroom of her home in Izmir. She died at a hospital.

The government has issued warnings to cut down on the number of deaths from carbon monoxide, which are common in Turkey once cold weather sets in. Residents have been advised not to leave coal fires burning while people are asleep and to make sure chimneys are swept regularly and homes are ventilated with a source of fresh air.
