CAIRO, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A cousin of slain Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been cleared of charges he tried to kill Egyptian police executing extradition papers, officials say.

The resolution of the attempted murder charges against Ahmed Qaddaf al-Dam will allow the extradition proceedings to begin, the Libya Herald reported Monday.

Qaddaf al-Dam was arrested after witnesses said he and his bodyguards fired on police wearing balaclavas who raided his house in Cairo March 19 in an attempt to serve an Interpol warrant for his extradition to Libya.

He was among 40 top former Gadhafi aides Tripoli sought to be returned to Libya for trial on various charges.

Qaddaf al-Dam holds an Egyptian residency permit and claims to have been born in Alexandria.

It was unknown if he was still in custody.

He also was acquitted of charges of resisting arrest and possessing unlicensed weapons.

Gadhafi, who ruled Libya for four decades, was captured and killed by Libyan militants in 2011 after being ousted from power during the country's civil war.
