SINGAPORE, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Police held 27 suspects Monday after what authorities described as the first riots in Singapore in four decades.
Some people reportedly were injured in clashes that were classified as "rioting with dangerous weapons" Sunday in Singapore's Little India section following a fatal accident in which a bus knocked down a 33-year-old national from India, Channel News reported.
Police did not provide details on the arrests.
About 400 people had gathered in Little India , a popular meeting place for migrant workers.
Police Commissioner Ng Joo Hee said rioters threw glass bottles and other projectiles at about 300 officers at the scene.
The rioting lasted about 2 hours, police said.
Officials said it was the first rioting in about 40 years in Singapore.
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean was quoted as saying the government will "not tolerate such lawless behavior" and that the incident would be thoroughly investigated.
The police commissioner warned that wanton violence "is not the Singapore way" and that everyone involved in it would be prosecuted.
Police said the driver of the bus, who was in a hospital, had not been arrested and would be interrogated about the accident.
