Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Protesters in Ukraine's capital city Kiev, smashed a statue of former Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin and brought the pieces to the center of the capital after Sunday's anti-government protests.
The protesters have rallied against Kiev's decision not to join the EU and instead build better ties with Russia.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych as well as elections to replace Yanukovych's government.
Hundreds of thousands have taken part in the protests.
"Those young people in the streets of Ukraine in freezing temperatures are writing the new narrative for Europe," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said, in what some are interpreting as his support for the protests.
