10 killed in attacks in on police station, mall in Kirkuk, Iraq

KIRKUK, Iraq, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Attacks on police headquarters and a hostage-taking incident in a mall in Kirkuk, Iraq, killed at least 10 people and wounded 75, police said Thursday.

A police official said the attacks began Wednesday when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive-laden vehicle near a police intelligence office in Kirkuk, followed by blasts as two other suicide bombers wearing explosive vests tried to seize the building, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

On Thursday, after they were unable to seize the police building, and at least three of the attackers held 11 people hostage at a nearby shopping mall for nearly 10 hours, the official told Xinhua.

A counter-terrorism force from Sulaimaniyah in the Kurdistan region was deployed to help end the hostage-taking incident, the official said.

The battle ended when the gunmen were killed, police said. Part of the mall burned down.
