MOSCOW, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The speaker of Russia's State Duma said he condemns a brawl that broke out between two lawmakers over a monument in Chechnya.
"[These men] are not worthy of the title of state deputies," Speaker Sergei Naryshkin said.
The fight between Alexei Zhuravlyov and Adam Delimkhanov took place Tuesday evening, RIA Novosti reported.
The two men, both members of the United Russia party, disagreed over a monument erected in memory of Chechen women killed by czarist troops in the 19th century.
Zhuravlyov said the statue could be extremist, which allegedly prompted Delimkhanov's attack.
"He suddenly hit me in the head with his fist and I started to defend myself," Zhuravlyov said. "I'm alive and well, but I don't look very pretty."
Assistants and bodyguards were unable to break up the fight, which only ended when a gold-plated pistol fell out of Delimkhanov's pocket.
Duma officials said firearms are only allowed in the Legislature with special permission, and all deputies are searched before entering.
Delimkhanov had been on the Interpol wanted list for allegedly ordering the killing of a Russian army commander. He has since been removed from the list, RIA Novosti reported.
