REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- A citizen was killed in a shootout with police for the first time in Iceland's history, authorities said.
The incident occurred Monday when a man in his 50s fired at police from his apartment window in Reykjavik, the Iceland Review reported.

Officers came under fire as they tried to enter the man's apartment, police told reporters at a press conference. Officers shot at the man to subdue him and he was taken to a hospital where he died.
It was unclear why police were at the man's apartment.
A special prosecutor was to investigate the shooting, the Iceland Review said.
