221 migrants rescued off coast of Italy

ROME, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Italian authorities Monday rescued more than 200 migrants from distressed ships off the southeast coast of Italy, officials said.

The Italian coast guard saved 121 passengers from a vessel that was making its way to the Italian mainland, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

A migrant from Egypt aboard the vessel made a distress call using a satellite phone Sunday. Italian authorities were not able to make the rescue until Monday because of poor weather conditions.

An Italian navy frigate rescued about 100 migrants about 75 miles southeast of Crotone, ANSA said.

It was not reported how the navy vessel came across the migrants or where they originated.
