CAIRO, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Security forces used tear gas and batons to disperse supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi protesting in Tahrir Square, witnesses said.
The crowd, estimated at about 1,000, was protesting the death of Cairo University student Mohamed Reda, who was killed by police Thursday during a demonstration, Ahram Online reported.
The demonstrators marched from Cairo University in Giza to Tahrir Square, which was sealed off by army tanks and police vehicles in all directions.
The protesters held banners reading "down with military rule," al-Masry al-Youm reported.
The Egyptian army and police withdrew Sunday from Nahda Square near the University of Cairo for the first time in months, the Anadolu Agency reported. The news agency said the move appears to have been made in an attempt to avoid clashes with protesters.
Student protests were reported at other schools across Egypt, including al-Azhar University in Cairo and the Faculty of Engineering in Beni Suef, Ahram Online reported.
