MOSCOW, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Russian officials have asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate alleged abuse of Russian children adopted by Americans.
The head of Russia's Investigative Committee urged U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to open an investigation into allegations 26 Russian-born children who were adopted by U.S. parents have been abused or exchanged on the Internet.
Reports have named 26 children specifically who have allegedly been abused or were adopted with the intent of abusing a child, Russian officials have charged, RIA Novisti reported Monday.
More than 60,000 children from Russia have been adopted in the United States since the early 1990s but Russia enacted a law this year halting all adoptions to the United States.
The Russian government cited several instances of children being abused or killed. U.S. officials dispute there is any widespread problem.
Holder has not responded to the Russian inquiry, the report said.
