11 Iraqis executed for terrorism convictions

BAGHDAD, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Iraqi prison officials Tuesday executed 11 people convicted of terrorism charges, the Justice Ministry announced.

Justice Minister Hassan al-Shimmari said the executions were carried out after they received presidential approval, IraqiNews.com reported. The death sentences were issued Sunday.

"All of the 11 convicts sentenced to death penalty, are Iraqis," Shimmari said. "The 11 convicts sentenced to death penalty, had carried out heinous terrorist operations against the Iraqi people, and they found guilty on terror charges ... ."

Middle East Online said the 11 executions raised to 162 the number of those put to death so far in 2013. More than 500 people have died in so far in November, as authorities grapple with some of the worst violence since 2008.
