KHARTOUM, Sudan, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A Rwandan soldier serving with international peacekeeping forces was killed in an ambush Monday in North Darfur, U.N. officials say.

The non-commissioned officer died in an attack on a convoy of 60 Rwandan soldiers, the Sudan Times reported.

In a statement, the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, referred to as UNAMID, said the attack occurred near Kabkabiya, near the border with Chad.

UNAMID said it expected Sudanese officials "to take swift action to bring the perpetrators of this and previous attacks on UNAMID to justice."

Seven Tanzanian peacekeepers were killed and 17 wounded five months ago in an attack in the same region.

More than 16,000 UNAMID peacekeepers are deployed in Darfur, where conflict broke out in 2003.
