Man in England gets 19-year jail term for child sex abuse

EXETER, England, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- John Bidmead of Devon, England, received a 19-year jail term Monday after admitting in court he sexually abused young girls, court records said.

Bidmead, 65, had so much indecent material stored on home computers that police stopped counting at 640,000 items, the Exeter Crown Court heard in testimony. Police added Bidmead was watching a child sex abuse video on a 50-inch television when they arrived with the warrant to arrest him.

"There was too much material to examine all of it ... but estimates of a total exceed 1 million [images]. It is the largest amount in this part of the country, as far as we are aware," prosecuting attorney Richard Crabb said.

In court Bidmead admitted to four rapes and four indecent of sexual assaults on a girl, and two sexual assaults on a second girl, the offenses occurring from 2001 to 2007. The assaults, which he videotaped, began when the girls were 8 to 10 years of age, court records said.

He also groomed two other girls for sexual abuse situations, and paid a fifth girl, 8, to pose indecently for him, the British newspaper The Mirror reported Monday.
