Close presidential vote expected in Honduras Sunday

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Final polls predicted a close presidential election in Honduras, where voters trooped to the polls amid tight security Sunday.

The race was so tight that some polls revealed a statistical tie between the two candidates and the potential for a disputed outcome, the BBC said.

Conservative Juan Orlando Hernandez was running neck-and-neck with Xiomara Castro, the wife of former president Manuel Zelaya, who was kicked out of office in 2009 by a military coup.

Hernandez, recently the president of the Honduran congress, is an open supporter of the coup and has blamed Zelaya for many of the nation's problems, the BBC said.

Political observers fear an uncertain outcome of the vote could lead to further instability. Thousands of police and soldiers were on the streets Sunday to maintain head off any political violence.
