CAIRO, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Students at Cairo's al-Azhar University campus protested Sunday urging justice for a fellow student killed during a demonstration last week, officials said.
Also Sunday, security forces sealed off main squares in Cairo and Giza ahead of planned demonstrations by Mohammed Morsi supporters, officials said.
Dozens of students at the university's campus in Cairo and the Nile Delta's al-Mansoura campus defied a ban barring protests on campus, Ahram Online said.
The students at the Cairo campus protested the death of a student shot by security forces Wednesday during a demonstration at al-Azhar. Students at al-Mansoura were protesting to mark 100 days since hundreds of Mohammed Morsi's supporters were violently dispersed by police at two Aug.14 sit-ins in Cairo, the website said.
Ahmed Hosni, the deputy director of al-Azhar, said studies continued as normal and only a handful of students participated in Sunday's protest.
In Cairo Sunday, the pro-Morsi coalition announced plans to demonstrate in the capital also to mark 100 days since the bloody dispersal of followers by police at the Aug.14 sit-ins.
A large police presence was deployed throughout the capital and more than 40 military and police vehicles were deployed at entrances to the squares and barbed wire fences and iron barriers were erected, al-Masry al-Youm and Ahram Online reported.
Police cordoned off Tahrir Square, Giza's el-Nahda Sqaure, Nasr City's Rabaa al-Adawiya and Mohandesen's Mostafa Mahmoud Square, Ahram Online reported.
The heavy security presence led to widespread traffic jams in the capital, Ahram Online said.
