Lebanese official says embassy attackers also tried to kill him

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- The speaker of the Lebanese Parliament says suicide bombers who attacked the Iranian Embassy in Beirut are from the same group that threatened to kill him.

"Those who targeted the embassy are the same team that threatened to assassinate me as well as Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai and Army Commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi," Nabih Berri was quoted as saying in a report by The (Lebanon) Daily Star Wednesday.

"Those [attackers] are known in terms of their identity and the places they come from."

The embassy attack Tuesday, in which at least 25 people were killed and more than 150 wounded, was claimed by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, an al-Qaida-linked group based in Lebanon. It has threatened more attacks if Hezbollah forces are not withdrawn from Syria.

Berri revealed in May 2012 that he and several other Lebanese officials had been targeted for assassination.

Lebanese army intelligence officers said Lebanon is likely to seek help from Interpol to find the groups that imported the explosives used in the embassy attack.
