Lawyer to appeal Pussy Riot's member's sentence

MOSCOW, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- A lawyer for Maria Alyokhina, one of the imprisoned members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, said he plans to appeal her sentence Wednesday.

Alyokhina and Pussy Riot bandmate Nadezhda Tolokonnikova are serving two-year prison sentences for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred for a performance in Moscow's main cathedral in February 2012.

A third band member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was tried and released on appeal.

Alyokhina's lawyer said he will file a supervisory appeal against her sentence with the Supreme Court, just as Tolokonnikova's lawyers did in early November, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia's Human Rights Commissioner Vladimir Lukin supported Tolokonnikova's application.
