French minister gets more security after racist threats

PARIS, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira has received increased security after a string of racist threats, government officials said.

The Guyanese-born minister has been likened to a monkey among other racist remarks, Radio France Internationale reported Saturday. She has also received threats of bodily harm.

A group of left-leaning trade unions and political activists has called for a national day of protest against the racist remarks. The country's ruling Socialist Party is organizing a rally "for the defense of the republic against extremism" in Paris on Dec. 2 in response to the situation.

A member of the minority Union for a Popular Movement party was expelled last week after it was found she posted a racist montage on Tauriba's Facebook page.
