Crowded roof collapses at religious event in India; 3 die, 40 hurt

KANPUR, India, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- The roof of a crowded house in Kanpur, India, caved in during a Muharram religious procession Friday, killing three people and injuring about 40, police said.

"Some people risked their lives by climbing an old building to have a view of the Muharram procession passing through Bangarmau locality of the district," Superintendent of Police Sonia Singh said.

"The house was in a dilapidated state; a major portion of the roof of the house caved in ... leading to the tragedy.

Most of the injured were women, the Times of India reported.

"The bodies of three persons were found when the rescuers started removing debris from the collapsed structure," said a senior police official whose name wasn't reported.
