Yemen human rights ministry investigating child marriage in Taiz

SANA'A, Yemen, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Yemen human rights officials said are investigating a case of child marriage after arranging a divorce for a 12-year-old girl from the city of Taiz.

Abdul Hamed Sultan, a local ministry of human rights official in the city, received a tip from a woman about the wedding, Gulf News reported.

Sultan attempted to stop the wedding but the marriage had already been finalized, so he arranged for a divorce.

"The bridegroom was angry when he learned that his father was going to marry him off to an underage girl. He did not mind divorcing her. He immediately got married to another older bride," he said.

The girl returned to school after the divorce, Gulf News reported.

The girl and her father declined to speak to the media.

Waleed Abdullah Radman, the general coordinator of the ministry, said his office is investigating the incident.

Child marriages in Yemen have received increased public attention recently due to the marriage and death of a 9-year-old girl.

Activists are pushing for a law that would prohibit marriage for those under the age of 18.
