Stranded whale being towed to open water from Canadian bay

CAPE BRETON, Nova Scotia, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- A whale trapped in a shallow cove in Nova Scotia was being towed to open waters Wednesday, a wildlife official said.

"Things are looking good at this time," David Jennings of the provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. during the afternoon.

The whale became stranded in Jersey Cove in Cape Breton during the morning, he said.

Andrew Reid of the Marine Animal Response Society, who hadn't seen the whale for himself, said descriptions of the marine mammal led him to believe it's a minke whale, a relatively small species common in Atlantic waters.

Reid suspected the whale may have come in close to shore to feed only to be trapped by the ebbing tidewater.
