Egyptian doctor refused to treat boy named after military leader

CAIRO, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- An Egyptian doctor refused to treat a 4-month-old boy named after the country's military ruler, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the baby's father said.

After seeing the baby's name written on a hospital registration form, Dr. Ezzat Abdulazziz ordered the mother to take the child out of the facility, Osama Attya said. The baby was treated by another doctor, he said.

The mother had recently taken her son to the Kafr el-Sheik hospital after she discovered he was suffering from a high fever, the Egypt Independent reported.

Regional Gov. Mohamed Ezzat Aqwa told the newspaper the doctor was disciplined -- barred from treating patients and only allowed to carry out administrative duties. He said the doctor had demonstrated "negligence in his duties as a physician" and would be referred "to the administrative prosecutor for further punitive decisions."

Attya told the Egypt Independent he named his son after the military ruler after attending a rally in Tahrir Square in Cairo in July.

"I named him al-Sisi because I love General Sisi," he said.
