BANGKOK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The mother-in-law of a Thai marksman who competed in the 2012 Olympics said Monday she hired a man to kill him after he repeatedly beat up her daughter.
Surang Duangchinda, 72, said she ordered the murder of Jakkrit "X" Panichpatikum, who died Oct. 19 after he was shot three times, "because my son-in-law beat up my daughter over and over again, and I had forgiven him many times but nothing had improved," the Bangkok Post reported.
She made the admission in a news conference at the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the report said.
"I'm sorry for what I did but I'm old and I don't know how long I can take care of my only daughter," Surang said.
Her daughter, Dr. Nitiwadee Pucharoenyos, the widow of Panichpatikum, was not involved in the killing, Surang said.
Panichpatikum had been out on bail since July on charges including attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms. He had been arrested for firing a gun into the air at his home to frighten his wife before assaulting her, police said.
The alleged gunman, Jirasak Klinkhlai, 33, was arrested Friday.
