RED LAKE, Ontario, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A survivor of the crash of a Bearskin Airlines plane in Canada that killed five people was credited by police Monday with saving the life of a fellow passenger.
The 19-passenger, twin-turboprop Fairchild Metroliner crashed short of the Red Lake, Ontario, airport runway about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.
"When the plane hit the ground, it burst into flames," Ontario Provincial Police spokesman Rob McDonough said. "One of the passengers sitting in the rear of the plane was able to rescue a female passenger, also at the rear of the aircraft, and drag her to safety."
The survivors, who were taken to a hospital, were a man and woman from Winnipeg.
The plane's two pilots -- ages 25 and 34, both of Mississauga -- and three passengers -- a 53-year-old woman, a 53-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, all of Red Lake -- died, KenoraOnline reported.
The victims' names had not been released.
McDonough said the plane was on a flight from Sioux Lookout to Red Lake.
Flames from the wreckage ignited vegetation around the aircraft, he said.
