Cyclone kills 100, flattens hundreds of homes in Somalia's Puntland

MOGADISHU, Somalia, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Up to 100 people died in a tropical cyclone that hit the northeastern Somali region of Puntland during the weekend, a regional leader says.

Abdirahman Farole, the president of Puntland, said hundreds of homes were destroyed when tropical cyclone 03A brought high winds, heavy rains and flash floods to the area Saturday and Sunday, the BBC reported Monday.

Some fishermen were also missing and thousands of livestock had died, Farole added.

Authorities were attempting to help the affected areas by delivering food such as dates and food by air because roads were impassable, he said.
