LONDON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The British newspaper News of the World had voicemail messages of a girl later found murdered, the court in the London phone-hacking trial heard Tuesday.
Former News of the World editor Stuart Kuttner, 73, one of eight defendants on trial, was too ill to attend court proceedings and so had his statement read in court. He said the newspaper was in possession of a voicemail recording on the phone of Milly Dowler, 13, who was missing and found murdered in 2002. It added Kuttner contacted police with "information that may assist them" in finding the girl.
News of the World, which has since been shut down, made no secret of hacking the girl's voice messages, the British newspaper The Guardian noted, adding quotes from the hacked message were printed in articles about the missing girl.
