Socialists seek relocation of Franco's remains

MADRID, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A bill introduced in Spain's parliament would remove the remains of dictator Francisco Franco from a national memorial.

The bill, written by the socialist PSOE party, would exhume Franco's remains from the Valley of the Fallen and turn them over to the Franco family for private burial.

The Valley of the Fallen is a Roman Catholic basilica and memorial Franco had built to honor victims of the Spanish Civil War. The war brought Franco and his fascist government to power in 1939, and he remained in office until his death in 1975.

The Local.es said the PSOE legislation called Franco "the perpetuator of a totalitarian regime" who should not remain in a location meant to be a neutral memorial to the dead on both sides of the war.
