Kenyan gang rape suspects ordered to cut grass as punishment

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Kenyan officials pledged an investigation into why three men accused of rape were made to cut grass as punishment, instead of being prosecuted.

A 16-year-old girl known by the pseudonym Liz was attacked and gang-raped in the western province Busia on her way back to Nairobi after attending her grandfather's funeral. She was then thrown into a pit latrine, suffering a back injury that's confined her to a wheelchair since, the BBC reported Saturday.

Though the victim was able to identify three of her six attackers, police failed to prosecute the men, instead ordering them to cut grass to make up for their crime.

Hundreds of people protested Thursday outside police headquarters in the capital. More than 1.3 million people have signed an online petition demanding justice for the crimes.

Kenyan Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said he had "sent the matter to the National Council for the Administration of Justice for immediate action."
