South African man gets two life terms for rape, murder

SWELLENDAM, South Africa, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A South African man convicted of raping and brutally killing 17-year-old Anene Booysen was sentenced to two life terms in prison.

The court in Swellendam, South Africa, ruled Johannes Kana, 21, should spend life in prison after he admitted raping the girl, who died in February hours after she said she was raped by five or six men, the BBC reported Friday.

Though he confessed to rape, Kana said he didn't kill the girl, who was left for dead at a construction site near her house in Bredasdorp. A doctor who treated Booysen after the incident said her injuries -- she was disemboweled -- were the worst she had ever seen.

President Jacob Zuma called the attack "shocking, cruel and most inhumane."

Two other suspects were arrested for the attack, but Kana was the only one who stood trial, the BBC said.
