Report: Israeli warplanes strike military base in Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Israeli forces carried out an airstrike on a military base near Latakia, Syria, and on a target in the capital, Damascus, media reports said Thursday.

Al-Arabiya said Israeli forces carried out two attacks on Syria Wednesday night -- one near Latakia and one in Damascus -- and said the attacks resulted in the destruction of SA-8 surface-to-air missiles that were to be delivered to Hezbollah forces in Lebanon.

Citing an Obama administration official whose name it did not report, CNN said Thursday the United States confirmed the report of airstrikes.

Syrian media said the missile that struck near Latakia was fired from the Mediterranean.

The Syrian website Dampress.com reported eyewitnesses said there were no injuries in the explosion near Latakia but damage to the military base was extensive, Ynetnews said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported an explosion in the area.

The Israeli government did not immediately confirm the strike but Israeli media carried reports of an explosion at a missile storage site near the target.
