Two armed Dagestan militants killed in shootout with police

KHASAVYURT, Russia, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Police in the Russian republic of Dagestan killed two armed men Friday and later found explosives and weapons in their car, anti-terrorism officials said.

A firefight erupted between traffic police and passengers in a car after the car was pulled over in the city of Khasavyurt, Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said in a statement, adding the two unidentified people in the car were killed and an Interior Ministry officer was wounded.

The statement added two 50-liter (13.2 gallon) barrels of homemade explosives were found in the car, as well as weapons, ammunition and other bombmaking ingredients.

Violent clashes between law enforcement and militant groups are a common occurrence in Dagestan, the site of numerous ethnic, religious and political rivalries, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti said.
