Saudi women to protest driving ban

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry issued a warning against women caught driving during a planned driving-ban protest.

The protest is scheduled for Saturday as part of an online petition calling for women to be issued driver's licenses, the British newspaper The Guardian reported Friday.

"If there was one word to describe what it is like to be a Saudi woman, it would be the word patronizing. No matter how long you live, you remain a minor in the eyes of the government," said Eman al-Najfan, a blogger who posted a video of herself driving online and supports the protest.

Government and Sharia law don't explicitly prohibit women from driving in Saudi Arabia but they are not issued driver's licenses, the newspaper said.

The government didn't say what punishments might be handed out for women caught driving or demonstrating against the ban, CNN reported.

"All violations will be dealt with -- whether demonstrations or women driving," Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki said.
