Plane encounters turbulence on descent, lands safely in Dublin

DUBLIN, Ireland, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Several passengers on a United Airlines flight landing at Dublin Airport sustained minor injuries when the plane lost altitude during descent, officials said.

Flight UA23 from New York, with 129 customers and eight crew members on board, landed safely Sunday but was met by medical personnel on the runway because a number of passengers sustained injuries when the plane's altitude dropped, the Irish Independent reported.

"One customer was taken to hospital to receive medical attention and has since been discharged. Seven other customers sustained minor injuries and were released by medical services," a United Airlines representative said.

United Airlines is conducting an investigation into what happened during the flight.

The trouble began after the plane began its descent, NBC News reported.

"We hit a pretty bad downdraft and we have some passengers hurt so we need some ambulances to meet the flight," air traffic control audio of the pilot's remarks to the tower after encountering rough air indicated.

A co-pilot later told air traffic controllers, "It might be as many as six or seven people so might need a couple of ambulances."
