Israeli Army finds mile-long tunnel from Gaza into Negev region

JERUSALEM, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- The Israeli Army has discovered a tunnel about a mile long from Gaza into the Eshkol region in the Negev, officials say.

The tunnel, which was uncovered this week, is more than 5 feet high and has telephone connections and electrical power, The Jerusalem Post reported. About 24,000 cement slabs went into its construction, cement Israel sent to Gaza for civilian rebuilding, officials said.

Officials suggested the tunnel could have served two purposes. One is facilitating the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers to be used to win the exchange of Hamas prisoners being held by Israel and the other is potential terrorist attacks.

The tunnel was the third one found this year.
